China Calls for Diplomacy and Restraint on Iran’s Nuclear File

China’s position at the UN Security Council underscores the importance of diplomatic engagement, respect for international legal frameworks, and restraint in addressing Iran’s nuclear issue. Ambassador Fu Cong criticised the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal, sanctions, and military strikes, arguing that these actions have contributed to the current impasse and hindered the IAEA’s safeguards work. Beijing also challenged the legality of the European snapback mechanism and the convening of the Council meeting, warning that procedural disputes risk deepening divisions.

China’s call for Iran to honour its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, alongside a US commitment against further military action, reflects the need for reciprocal assurances to rebuild confidence. Sustained dialogue, credible verification, and diplomatic cooperation remain essential to preventing further escalation and pursuing a peaceful resolution to the nuclear dispute.
