US-Iran draft framework signals a possible diplomatic breakthrough

A preliminary framework reportedly obtained by Al Arabiya outlines a potential pathway towards de-escalation between Washington and Tehran, addressing key sticking points including Iran’s enriched uranium, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and reciprocal sanctions relief. The proposed phased approach, involving independent verification and possible Chinese guarantees, could provide a basis for rebuilding confidence between the two sides.

Qatar’s continued mediation efforts and Turkiye’s diplomatic engagement underscore growing regional involvement in facilitating an agreement. However, the reported draft remains unverified, with neither Washington nor Tehran publicly endorsing its provisions. Pakistan’s absence from the proposed framework is also notable, particularly as the potential third-country arrangement for Iran’s enriched uranium could carry wider regional implications.

A durable agreement will ultimately depend on reciprocal commitments, credible verification and addressing the security and economic concerns of both sides.
