An Anti-Terrorism Court in Rawalpindi has announced a significant verdict in the case related to the attack on the General Headquarters during the events of May 9 riots in Pakistan. The court sentenced 47 proclaimed offenders to 10 years in prison each after finding them guilty of terrorism charges.
In addition to the prison terms, the court imposed a fine of Rs500,000 on each of the convicted individuals. The verdict marks a major development in the legal proceedings related to the violence and unrest that erupted across the country following the May 9 incidents.
Prominent Political Figures Among Convicted
According to the court’s ruling, several well-known political figures were among those convicted in the case. These include Azam Swati, Omar Ayub Khan, Zartaj Gul, Sheikh Rashid Shafiq, Kanwal Shauzab, Murad Saeed, Hammad Azhar, Jamshed Iqbal Cheema and Musarrat Jamshed Cheema, among others.
The court declared that fleeing from the law and avoiding judicial proceedings cannot be used to undermine the justice system. Authorities had previously declared several of the accused as proclaimed offenders after they failed to appear before the court.
Court Orders Property Confiscation
In addition to the prison sentences and fines, the court also ordered the confiscation of the properties of the convicted individuals. Officials stated that this step was taken to enforce accountability and ensure that those involved in acts of violence face the consequences of their actions.
Legal experts believe the verdict could have significant political and legal implications as the country continues to deal with the aftermath of the May 9 unrest.
