Margalla Ecosystem Restoration Project Commences with Tree Plantation

A large-scale tree plantation campaign has been launched in the areas adjoining the Margalla Hills, aiming to restore the region’s ecosystem and address environmental degradation caused by previous unregulated activities. The initiative, coordinated by the Punjab Forest Department, is part of a broader effort to revive the green cover and enhance biodiversity in the region.

According to officials, certain areas had suffered significant damage from uncontrolled crushing and other disruptive activities, affecting soil stability and local flora. The current campaign seeks to rehabilitate these areas through organized planting of native tree species, which experts say will help reduce soil erosion, support wildlife habitats, and improve ecological balance.

Community Engagement and Long-Term Goals

The initiative also emphasizes participation from local communities, including students and volunteers from educational institutions, to foster environmental awareness and stewardship. The first phase of the campaign involves planting 50,000 saplings, with plans to expand to seed sowing and long-term maintenance in future phases. Officials highlighted that the program is not limited to tree planting but aims to restore the Margalla ecosystem comprehensively.

Environmental specialists have welcomed the campaign as a timely and necessary step, noting that sustained efforts and proper maintenance will be crucial for lasting impact. Authorities have also urged citizens to actively support the initiative by protecting planted trees and engaging in eco-friendly practices. If successfully implemented, the campaign is expected to significantly enhance the Margalla Hills’ green cover and contribute to a healthier environment for current and future generations.
