Pakistan Governance Forum 2026 Opens as IMF Review Mission Arrives

Pakistan Governance Forum 2026 Begins in Islamabad

A two-day Pakistan Governance Forum 2026 commenced in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif inaugurating the event. The forum gathers policymakers, economic experts, and development partners to deliberate on governance reforms, institutional strengthening, and economic sustainability.

In his address, the prime minister reaffirmed the government’s resolve to enhance transparency, improve public service delivery, and implement structural reforms aimed at stabilizing the economy. The forum is being viewed as a key platform for aligning governance strategies with ongoing fiscal and economic challenges.

IMF Review Mission and FBR Revenue Shortfall

Simultaneously, a review mission from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is arriving in Pakistan to evaluate performance targets set for July to December 2025. Successful completion of the review could unlock a $1.2 billion tranche under the existing financial program.

However, negotiations are expected to be challenging, as the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) faces a tax collection shortfall of Rs329 billion. Discussions are likely to focus on revenue enhancement, fiscal discipline, and corrective measures to meet agreed benchmarks and sustain economic support.
