Pakistan has expressed profound concern over the deteriorating situation in Venezuela, warning that rising tensions threaten regional and international peace and security. The statement came during an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council, convened to discuss recent US military actions in the country.
Pakistan’s Acting Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, cautioned that unilateral military actions undermine international law and set dangerous precedents at a time of multiple global crises.
Pakistan Calls for De-escalation and Diplomacy
Addressing the Council, Ambassador Jadoon stressed that the UN Charter obliges states to respect sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs. He said the use of force violates these principles and erodes the global legal order.
Pakistan urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, avoid escalation, and pursue peaceful solutions through dialogue and diplomacy. Ambassador Jadoon emphasized that lasting political solutions must reflect the will of the Venezuelan people, free from external pressure. He welcomed offers of mediation and noted that the UN Secretary-General’s offices remain available to support peaceful engagement.
Global Reactions Expose Deep Divisions
The meeting followed a US special forces operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. The United States defended the action as a “surgical law enforcement operation.” In contrast, China and Russia strongly condemned the move, calling it illegal and a violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres also voiced concern, warning that the operation could deepen instability and breach international law.
Pakistan concluded by reaffirming its commitment to upholding international law, promoting peaceful conflict resolution, and supporting stability in Venezuela and the wider region.
