Pakistan to Receive Russian Crude Oil Shipment Amid Strait of Hormuz Crisis

Amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, reports indicate that around 733,000 barrels of Russian crude oil will soon be delivered to Port Qasim in Pakistan. According to Russian media citing energy expert Dr. Mahmooda Salameh, the shipment reflects ongoing energy cooperation between Pakistan and Russia. The development comes at a time when global oil markets are facing uncertainty due to regional conflicts and disruptions in key maritime routes.

The delivery is expected to support Pakistan’s energy supply and help manage domestic fuel demand. It also demonstrates Islamabad’s efforts to diversify its energy sources during a period of geopolitical instability.

Pakistan’s Shift Toward Energy Diversification

Traditionally, Pakistan has relied heavily on oil imports from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. However, in recent years, the country has explored alternative suppliers to reduce dependency on a limited number of sources. The purchase of Russian crude oil reflects this broader strategy of energy diversification.

Experts believe that importing oil from Russia could provide Pakistan with more competitive prices and help stabilize energy supplies during volatile global market conditions.

Rising Oil Prices and Economic Concerns

The Pakistan Business Council has warned that fluctuations in global oil prices could significantly impact Pakistan’s economy. According to the council, a 10 percent rise in oil prices could add between $1.5 billion and $2 billion to the country’s current account deficit. If global prices reach $100 per barrel, the annual deficit could increase by as much as $5–7 billion.

Analysts say the situation highlights the importance of energy diversification and strategic planning for Pakistan as global energy markets remain uncertain.
