Pakistan Reaffirms Saudi Defence Pact Amid Iran Tensions

Mutual Defence Pact: Pakistan and Saudi Arabia  Reshaping the Muslim World Order

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has revealed that Islamabad formally reminded Tehran of its longstanding defence pact with the Saudi Arabia during recent diplomatic engagements. Speaking at a press conference, he stated, “We have a defence pact with Saudi Arabia. I conveyed this to the Iranian side.”

According to the Foreign Minister, the Iranian counterpart responded by requesting assurances that Saudi territory would not be used against Iran. The exchange reflects the delicate balance Pakistan is maintaining amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region.

Shuttle Diplomacy to Prevent Escalation

Dar disclosed that Pakistan engaged in “shuttle communication” between the concerned parties to reduce misunderstandings and prevent further escalation. This behind-the-scenes diplomacy aimed to maintain regional stability and avoid the widening of conflict.

He pointed out that when comparing recent developments, the level of attacks attributed to Iran has been comparatively minimal toward Saudi Arabia and Oman. While he did not directly claim credit, the statement suggested that Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach may have contributed to de-escalation efforts.

Balancing Regional Relationships

Pakistan shares close strategic and economic ties with both Iran and Saudi Arabia, making neutrality and dialogue crucial for Islamabad’s foreign policy. The reaffirmation of the defence pact signals Pakistan’s commitment to Riyadh’s security while simultaneously maintaining open diplomatic channels with Tehran.

The Foreign Minister’s remarks highlight Islamabad’s role as a potential mediator in regional disputes, emphasizing dialogue over confrontation during a period of rising geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East.
