Samarkand, Uzbekistan — Mohammad Ewaz Badghisi, a former member of Afghanistan’s Constitutional Council and a leading figure in the carpet industry, passed away today at the age of 105 in Samarkand.
A Legacy in Carpets and Industry
Badghisi was a renowned producer and exporter of Afghan carpets. In 1973, he taught carpet weaving and natural dyes at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States. He received the Gold Medal of Industry from former President Mohammad Daoud Khan for his contributions to Afghanistan’s industrial sector.
He held key positions including board member of the Afghanistan Carpet Exporters Union, deputy head of imports at the Afghanistan Economic Council, board member of the Afghanistan Private Industries Association, and deputy minister of artisans. His work helped shape Afghanistan’s traditional craft and industrial development.
Passing of a Cultural Icon
Mohammad Ewaz Badghisi’s death marks the end of a remarkable era in Afghanistan’s carpet industry. He will be laid to rest this afternoon in Samarkand. His legacy in crafts, trade, and education continues to inspire artisans and industrialists alike.
