90% of SIM Cards in Afghanistan Now Legally Registered

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has announced that 90 percent of SIM cards in Afghanistan are now legally registered. Officials say the move strengthens security and supports crime prevention across the country.

According to ministry data, Afghanistan currently has more than 26 million active SIM cards. Around 24 million of these are officially registered with the government. The remaining SIM cards are in the process of verification.

Enayatullah Alokozai, spokesperson for the Ministry, said the registration drive gained momentum after the return of the Islamic Emirate. He confirmed that nearly four million new subscribers have been added during this period. Authorities view the effort as a key step toward better governance of the telecom sector.

SIM Registration and Public Security

Residents in Kabul say SIM registration has played a visible role in reducing crime. Many believe registered numbers make it harder for criminals to operate anonymously.

Zubair, a Kabul resident, said the policy helps authorities trace suspects involved in theft and fraud. He added that identification through SIM records improves accountability. Another resident, Nasrullah, said crime rates have declined since the registration campaign began. He praised the initiative and urged its continuation.

Officials argue that registered SIM cards allow law enforcement agencies to investigate crimes more effectively. They also help curb illegal activities that rely on unverified communication networks.

Calls for Better Oversight and Services

While welcoming the progress, residents are calling for stronger oversight of telecom services. They want authorities to regulate internet quality and pricing alongside registration.

The Ministry has also highlighted improvements in infrastructure. More than 8,800 telecom sites are currently operational across Afghanistan. Officials say these sites ensure wider coverage and improved connectivity, even in remote areas.

The government has pledged to continue SIM registration efforts. It also aims to expand telecom services while tightening monitoring mechanisms. Authorities say these steps will enhance public safety and improve access to reliable communication nationwide.
