Incident Circulates on Social Media
A disturbing video reportedly from Bannu district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has gone viral on social media, showing a young girl allegedly being subjected to physical assault. In the footage, the girl appears to be wearing clothing traditionally associated with boys. Online posts accompanying the video claim that she was attacked because of this and that the perpetrators may be linked to militant groups.
TTP Issues Clarification
Following the growing outrage, a statement attributed to Muhammad Khorasani, spokesperson for Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan, denied that such actions align with the group’s stated principles. The statement described the organization as a “Sharia-based jihadist movement” that does not permit extrajudicial punishment or unlawful actions. According to the spokesperson, the leadership has ordered an internal inquiry into the matter.
Previous Incidents Raise Questions
Despite the clarification, critics argue that similar incidents in the past raise concerns about accountability. Observers have also drawn comparisons with recent actions by the Taliban in Afghanistan, including a reported case where a young orphan girl was detained after disguising herself as a boy to work and support her family.
Calls for Investigation
Human rights activists and social media users have strongly condemned the incident, with some reports suggesting the girl may be around 14 years old. Advocacy groups are calling for an impartial investigation and legal action against those responsible to ensure justice and prevent similar incidents in the future.
